State Investment Advances Creation of Pikes Peak Recreation Area, Unlocking Long-Term Economic and Community Benefits
Outdoor recreation remains a key driver of tourism, workforce attraction and economic growth in the Pikes Peak region, and a new state investment aims to strengthen that advantage for decades to come.
A Jan. 13 announcement from Gov. Jared Polis marked a significant milestone as the state of Colorado committed $2.5 million to help establish the Pikes Peak Recreation Area. The initiative is designed to unlock more than $75 million in long-term state investment, support permanent job creation and provide coordinated recreation and conservation management across the region.
The funding represents a critical first step toward a broader statewide partnership focused on strengthening outdoor recreation infrastructure while enhancing economic vitality, workforce opportunities and quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
State and local leaders gathered at a press conference to highlight the project’s importance, including Mayor Yemi Mobolade, members of the Colorado Springs City Council, regional stakeholders and representatives from the Pikes Peak Outdoor Recreation Alliance (PPORA), which has led coordination efforts for the initiative.

“This investment reflects a shared vision for responsible growth, stewardship, and long-term economic impact,” states local leaders, noting the region’s growing national profile as an outdoor destination.

“This investment not only advances immediate priorities such as Ring the Peak trails and wildlife habitat restoration, but also serves as a powerful catalyst for hundreds of millions of dollars in future public and private funding.”

Pikes Peak has long served as both a defining landmark and an economic anchor for Southern Colorado, supporting tourism, outdoor industries and community identity. Organizers also credited Colorado Parks and Wildlife for its leadership and partnership in advancing the project.
With the announcement, the Pikes Peak Recreation Area moves from concept toward implementation, positioning the region for sustained investment, enhanced recreation management and long-term economic returns.
Local Support and Private Investment
The initiative has also drawn strong local support from private donors and organizations, further accelerating momentum. Among those contributors is JW Roth, founder and CEO of Venu and Roth Brands, who has deep, lifelong roots in Colorado Springs.

“This project represents smart economic investment and smart growth. By leveraging outside funding, creating local jobs, strengthening tourism and building long-term recreation infrastructure, it benefits the entire community.”
